SAVE THE KENTISH PLOVER
The Association for the Defense and Study of Nature AGADEN coordinates the project “Save the Kentish Plover”, which, together with several entities, is developing protected areas along the Cádiz coast for the species Charadrius alexandrinus (Kentish Plover). This species is currently listed in the Red Book of Birds of Spain under the category “Endangered” and holds the category of special interest in the National Catalogue of Threatened Species. The project began in late 2020 in response to the need to address issues observed in previous years, such as nest destruction, egg theft, chick removal, and disturbances caused by cleaning machinery, among others.
The actions carried out by the coordinating staff, as well as volunteers, include joint work with local administrations to create a reserve area in each coastal town for the breeding of this species.
The actions taken include delimiting the area identified as a breeding zone, installing visible signage for beach users, conducting coastal cleanup campaigns, and promoting awareness.
