Save the Plover

The Little Ringed Plover is back on our Cádiz coastline. Learn about the work of the Agaden Ecologists’ organization “Save the Little Ringed Plover”, which researches and protects this charismatic member of our beaches. Raising awareness and education is essential for the conservation of this Cádiz treasure.

The Association for the Defense and Study of Nature AGADEN coordinates the project Save the Little Ringed Plover, which, along with several entities, is being developed by establishing protected areas along the Cádiz coast for the species Charadrius Alexandrinus (Little Ringed Plover). The current status of this bird is included in the Red Book of Birds of Spain with the category of Endangered and Special Interest in the National Catalogue of Threatened Species. The project started at the end of 2020 in response to the need to address the situations that have occurred in previous years, such as nest destruction, egg theft, chick removal, disturbances from cleaning machinery, etc.
The actions carried out by the staff coordinating the activity, as well as volunteers, include working alongside local administrations to create a protected area in each coastal town for the breeding of this species.

The actions include marking off the identified breeding area, placing visible signage for beachgoers, organizing coastal clean-up campaigns, and raising awareness.
